Notes on the Vilna Page

You now can add a note to anything on the Vilna page:

  • A word or words of the text of the Gemara
  • A word or words of a commentary like Rashi or Tosafos
  • Any word or words of an annotations around the side of the page.

To add a Note on the Vilna Page, follow the directions below.

First, put your finger on the phrase where you would like to add a note, hold it there for a second and then lift up. A menu will now pop up.

Now, drag the highlight tab to cover how much you would like to include in the note, then tap on "Add Note":

You will now be prompted to type in the note you would like to add. Tap where it says "Touch to enter notes" and your keyboard will appear.

Note Icons: Some people have different systems of note markers to indicate different kinds of notes . i.e. a question, and answer etc. We have attempted to replicate this functionality on the Vilna page - giving you the ability to have a visual marker that appears on the page.

After you have finished typing your note, you can choose the note icon that you would like to appear on your page.  To do so, tap here (the small "page" icon) and select an icon from the list, then tap "Save":

Your note looks like this on the page:

To view your note, just tap on the note icon:

The icon on the right allows you to expand the note to full screen

Additional notes about Vilna notes:

  • You can have multiple notes on the same word or overlapping words.
  • Each note has its own icon that appears to the right of the the first word the note is attached to.
  • On the Vilna page overlapping notes may produce overlapping icons
  • If there are overlapping notes on the the same words -when you tap on the icon you will get a selection list to pick which note you want to look at
  • If you you do a long hold on a word that has a note attached to it - you will get the selection bar and you will have an option to "Edit Note" or Add an additional one
  • You can assign a Category to your note to organize your notes.  Later you will be able to retrieve all notes by their tags.
  • You can assign a Tag or Tags to further classify your notes. Later you will be able to retrieve all notes by their tags.
  • You can type your note in any language that you have installed on your device
  • The default title of the Note:
    • The app knows if your selection is on the words of the Talmud or on a Rashi and which one. We have attempted present the titles in a way that common practice in Jewish books - Commentary name + Starting Words (Divrei Hamaschil)  + the selected words ....
    • If you want to customize the title you can override the default and type in the that field
  • The note window shows you the complete selection of words that you selected - only if it isn't already contain in the title.
  • You can select and copy the selected quoted text on the Vilna page - by tapping in the quotation  (this is not the case on the translation side)
  • You can also add notes to the Vilna text when you are viewing the Free Flowing text - however in that mode it does not let you select individual words - it is either phrases or whole comments or annotations.  The icons of notes placed on the Free flowing text mode - will show up later on the pdf view of the vilna page.
